From Summer Essential To Daily Ritual: India's Sunscreen Boom

Sunscreen is becoming an increasingly important part of skincare routines across India, with demand rising as temperatures climb and awareness of sun protection grows. The number of Indian households purchasing sunscreen has more than tripled over four years, reaching 14.3 million in June 2026, compared with 4.2 million in June 2022.

This growth reflects a major shift in consumer behaviour. Sunscreen, once considered an occasional summer essential, is increasingly being used throughout the year to protect skin from ultraviolet (UV) radiation, premature ageing and sun-related damage.

Rising Temperatures Drive Demand

India’s increasingly hot weather and changing climate patterns have encouraged more people to consider sun protection a daily necessity. At the same time, social media, skincare education and greater access to beauty products have helped consumers understand the importance of protecting their skin from prolonged sun exposure.

Younger consumers, in particular, are incorporating sunscreen into their everyday skincare routines. Rather than using it only during holidays or the summer months, many are applying it before work, outdoor activities and daily commutes.

The expansion of online shopping and wider retail availability has also made sunscreen easier to purchase across different regions and income groups.

Sunscreen Demand Expands Beyond Major Cities

Although urban consumers continue to drive much of the category’s growth, demand is gradually spreading to smaller towns and rural areas. Rural sunscreen penetration has tripled over the past four years, reaching 2.4%, while urban penetration has climbed to 7.1%.

Despite this progress, overall adoption remains relatively low, indicating considerable potential for further growth. Greater affordability, improved product availability and consumer education could help introduce sunscreen to more households across the country.

Affordable and Premium Products Target Different Needs

The Indian sunscreen market offers a broad range of products, from budget friendly options to premium formulations designed for specific skin types and concerns. Affordable products are helping make sun protection accessible to a wider audience, while premium brands are attracting consumers seeking lightweight textures, specialised ingredients and additional skincare benefits.

Products featuring different sun protection factors, moisturising properties and formulations for oily, dry or sensitive skin are also expanding consumer choice.

Competition among established companies and newer skincare brands has encouraged innovation and increased attention to product claims. Consumers are becoming more interested in understanding SPF ratings, testing standards and the actual level of protection offered by different products.

A Growing Opportunity for the Skincare Industry

Sunscreen still represents a relatively small share of India’s skincare market compared with some developed markets. However, rising awareness, changing lifestyles and increasing demand for preventive skincare suggest that the category has significant room to expand.

As consumers increasingly connect sun protection with long term skin health and anti ageing, sunscreen is moving beyond seasonal use. Affordability, reliable product performance and transparent communication are likely to play important roles in sustaining this growth.

The shift towards everyday sun protection signals a broader change in Indian skincare habits, creating opportunities for brands to reach new consumers across urban and rural markets.
